Hey, my name is James Lumber. I am a first year student at Queen's University, Belfast. I am currently studying for a Masters in Software Engineering. This website is a showcase of extra-curricular projects that I have created, to improve my skills in various areas of computer science, alongside my studies.

So about me, for my hobbies and interests, I enjoy playing football, basketball, and computer games in my free time. The latter is what really lit the spark for my great interest in the field of Computer Science as a whole. Within this field, I am interested in a wide variety of computer related topics. However, the main three topics that pique my interest are Cryptography, Financial Technology, and Artificial Intelligence.

In terms of my prior education, I undertook my A-Levels and GCSEs at St Mary's Grammar School Magherafelt. I achieved 7A*Business Studies, Digital Technology (Programming), Double Award Science, English Language, Further Mathematics, and Geography and 3A'sEnglish Literature, Irish Language, and Mathematics in my GCSEs, and 1A*Mathematics and 3A'sEconomics, Physics, and Software Systems Development in my A-Levels. Additionally, I was top in my school for Further Mathematics at GCSE, and Mathematics at AS Level.

Concerning experience, in the working world, I have 3 years of retail experience. More importantly than that though, I had a 3-month internship in the IT department of one of Northern Ireland's largest construction companies, Henry Brothers LTD. During this placement period, I had the privileged opportunity to see behind the scenes of the day to day running of the business' IT department, as well as aid them in various tasks to get hands-on experience.

Python and Statistics for Financial Analysis Course


Completed with The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology through Coursera. Gained experience working with historical economic data using Pandas and Matplotlib amongst other libraries. Learned how to fit economic prediction models using multiple variables in python and about the mathematical foundations of these models.

Data Analyst Summer Placement


Summer Placement with Henry Brothers where I spent my time reducing data redundancy in their database system in preparation for the company-wide migration to a new system. Then had to analyse the data and produce reports on where the company could save money and present these to the company's finance director.

QUB Datathon 24/25


Analysed NI census data using Alteryx to find patterns and produce visuals for our argument. Our team's solution involved introducing a government subsidised solar panel scheme to reduce the burden of energy payments on residents in more economically deprived areas. We presented our idea to a panel of judges and made it to the second round of the competition but unfortunately we did not make it to the final round.
